Traditionally the heads of the cottongrass were used to stuff pillows or make wicks for candles, but it is said that in World War 1 it was collected and used for wound dressings. Ardtun was an area of Bunessan that was offered as a place to live for those who refused to leave during the Highland Clearances and it is still dotted with old croft houses, one of which was the red-roofed Knockan House – home to the local weaver Malcolm Black.
